At the end of October, my latest novel M School, a young adult action thriller with an all-girl cast, will be released. My name will be on the cover, but a plethora of people will have helped make that book a reality.

M School started when John Muldoon (1) of Monthly Experiments urged readers of his blog to spend one-month working on a secret project. The idea was to pick a focused activity, work on it every day for a month, and not tell a soul until the month was over. I chose to write every day as my activity, and by the end of the month the first draft of M School was complete. Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by The Breaking Spine to highlight the upcoming books we're dying to read.

This week, I'd like to point you in the direction of the Return to the Canadian West trilogy by Janette Oke and her daughter Laurel Oke Logan. The story is meant to be a companion (though it's really a totally different story, just similar characters/setting) to the Hallmark television series When Calls the Heart which was actually loosely based on Oke's book by the same name.

I love Janette Oke and I love this series! I think this will be the first one of her book that I will have been waiting on for publication. Many of the ones I read as a kid came out in the 80's--before I was born.

So this is very exciting.

The next book, Where Hope Prevails, will be released on August 2, 2016. Unless you get it on Kindle, which will be about a month sooner. I MAY JUST BE TEMPTED.

Inspiring Conclusion to a Popular Series with a TV tie-in

When Beth Thatcher returns to Coal Valley, she has much to be excited about. She anticipates Jarrick's proposal of marriage and perhaps a spring wedding. The mine is expanding, and there are more schoolchildren than ever.

But the town's rapid growth brings many challenges. A second teacher is assigned, and Beth finds herself going head-to-head with a very different philosophy of education--one that dismisses religion and rejects God. Fearful for the children who sit under the influence of Robert Harris Hughes, Beth struggles to know how to respond.

At the same time, Beth wonders if Jarrick is considering a position at her father's company simply for her sake. Should she admit her feelings on the matter? Or keep silent and allow Jarrick to make up his own mind?
A Most Inconvenient Marriage by Regina Jennings 5 of 5 stars.

ABIGAIL STUART THOUGHT SHE WAS JEREMIAH CALHOUN'S WIDOW.

BUT JEREMIAH CALHOUN IS VERY HANDSOME,

VERY ALIVE, AND VERY PERPLEXED.

MOST INCONVENIENT INDEED.

With few options of her own, nurse Abigail Stuart agrees to marry her patient, a gravely wounded soldier calling himself Jeremiah Calhoun. They arrange a quick ceremony before he dies, giving Abigail the rights to his Ozark farm and giving Jeremiah the peace of knowing someone will care for his ailing sister after he's gone--a practical solution for both of them.

After the war, Abigail fulfills her side of the bargain--until the real Jeremiah Calhoun shows up, injured but definitely alive, and wastes no time in challenging Abigail's story. Abigail is flummoxed. After months of claiming to be his widow, how can she explain that she's never seen this Jeremiah Calhoun before? How can she convince him that she isn't trying to steal his farm? And will she find a way to stay, even though this practical arrangement has turned into a most inconvenient marriage? (Book blurb)

Newlywed Abigail Calhoun heads South into the wild Ozark mountains following the death of the jovial Confederate soldier, Jeremiah Calhoun, she married in a Union hospital. The young man generously offered Abigail a home and a family--something he couldn't possibly have known she needed so badly--in exchange for her nursing his sickly sister. Everything seems to be working out fine, until the real Captain Jeremiah Calhoun shows up and challenges her.

The real captain is serious, controlling and steadfastly goal-oriented, and the temptingly beautiful woman claiming to be his widow is dead-set on getting in the way of the very goals that have carried him through the war, the most important being his determination to marry his sweetheart. Only Abigail isn't the only obstacle. His Laurel has become engaged to another man. What's more, his sister, Rachel, is angry and bitter, having let her resentment toward Jeremiah fester over the four years that he's been gone.

Abigail and Jeremiah must search for their own peace and happiness whilst protecting "their" farm from the bushwackers and thieves that seem to be the Ozarks' only remuneration from the war. Will Abigail be able to overcome the painful secrets of her past and find a home with this frustratingly hard-headed man and his family? Will Rachel be able to find forgiveness? Will Jeremiah win back his love?

A Most Inconvenient Marriage is a brave, fast-paced story told from the perspectives of two strong, enigmatic characters that compliment each other beautifully. The romance is tension rich and uncertain, leaving the reader gasping and unsure what outcome to wish for the characters. The writing is full of depth and description that propels the tale along at a pleasant pace while keeping the reader immersed in the setting and time period from beginning to end.

I adore the way this novel is set up. It is told in third person with the point of view switching easily between Abigail and Jeremiah. The more dominant perspective in the beginning is Abigail's which maintains the mystery surrounding Jeremiah. When he steps onto the scene, we get more from his point of view which is hilariously different than Abigail's. There is a definite masculine feel to his parts that contrasts Abigail's more feminine perspective. Still, they compliment each other, making the ensuing romance delicious in a crossed wires sort of way. They're both willful and fully developed characters. I loved them both so much by the end!

The other character are just as interesting. They all have their own unique internal conflicts and goals. It adds to the beauty and richness of the novel as a whole. Jennings is obviously a masterful author when it comes to creating realistic characters and authentic settings.

I would suggest this book for anyone who loves a good strong heroine or a nice historical romance. The elements of faith that are woven throughout the book are subtle but still meaningful for Christian readers.
She barely has time to settle in before her mother announces plans for a family holiday--a luxurious steamship tour along the eastern coast of Canada and the United States. Hoping to reconnect with her mother and her sisters, Beth agrees to join them, but she quickly realizes that things have changed since she went away, and renewing their close bond is going to be more challenging than she expected.

There's one special thing to look forward to--letters and telephone calls from Jarrick, the Mountie who has stolen her heart. The distance between them is almost too much to bear. But can she give her heart to Jarrick when it will mean saying goodbye to her family once again--and possibly forever? And will she still want to live in the western wilds after the steamship tour opens up a world of people and places she never imagined?

Then comes a great test of Beth's faith. Someone in her family has trusted the wrong person, and suddenly everything Beth knows and loves is toppled. Torn between her family and her dreams, will Beth finally discover where her heart truly belongs? (Book blurb)

In Where Trust Lies the strength and courage of our Beth Thatcher is put to the test on a family vacation that turns out to be anything but relaxing.

Beth must wrestle with her mother's sometimes pushy opinions about all of her life choices--including Jarrick, who stays in contact with Beth throughout her time back home and on the trip. Not only that, but Beth must also try and be responsible of Julie when her sister begins running wild with unknown people of a lower-class on the cruise ship.

By the time Beth has finally gotten a grip on her emotions where her mother is concerned and possibly learned a great deal about her, the trip takes a tragic turn. Beth must keep faith when all of her hopes and dreams come crashing down around her.

Where Trust Lies is a beautiful, heartfelt story of life, family, and expectations when those things are in total disaccord. This story is every bit as exciting, romantic, and well-paced as Where Courage Calls. The characters are lush and vivid, reminiscent of the tv presences they are based on, but still with their own uniqueness and more emphasis on their God-centered lives.

Beth's difficult relationship with her mother is one of the focal points of the book, and it is fleshed out very well, creating most of the tension. The maturing of Beth's attitude towards her mother is heartwarming-even when her mother's strong opinions begin to cause Beth to question her faith in Jarrick and the good work she's been doing in the West.

Overall, a fantastic read! Exciting, funny, and as un-put-down-able as anything Janette Oke has ever written. It should be satisfying for fans of the author as well as the Hallmark television show.

A special companion story to Hallmark Channel's When Calls the Heart TV series.

Her courage and her heart will be tested in ways she never expected. . .

Beth Thatcher has spent her entire life in the safe, comfortable world of her family, her friends, and the social outings her father's wealth provides. But Beth is about to leave it all behind to accept a teaching position in the rugged foothills of western Canada. Inspired by her aunt Elizabeth, who went west to teach school several years ago, and gently encouraged by her father, Beth resolves to put her trust in God and bravely face any challenge that comes her way.

But the conditions in Coal Valley are even worse than she'd feared. A recent mining accident has left the town grieving and at the mercy of the mining company. The children have had very little prior education, and many of the locals don't even speak English. There isn't even a proper schoolhouse. In addition, Beth's heart is torn between two young men--both Mounties, one a lifelong friend and the other a kind, quiet man who comes to her aid more than once.

Despite the many challenges, Beth is determined to make a difference in the rustic frontier town. But when her sister visits from the East, reminding her of all the luxuries she's had to give up, will Beth decide to return to her privileged life as soon as the school year is over?

Elizabeth Thatcher has been small and prone to sickness all her life. In a day where women are seen as being weak already, Beth's constitution could prove an insurmountable challenge to her independence. Especially if her mother has anything to say about it. But like her Aunt Elizabeth before her, Beth feels called by God to teach in the wild Canadian west amongst poor immigrants.

With her father's blessing and a verse of Gospel, Beth goes out in faith knowing that the journey as well as the life she will be leading in the poor mining town of Coal Valley will prove physically difficult.

Leaning on Christ's strength, Beth learns who she is and makes an amazing impact on the tragedy-stricken town.

Where Courage Calls by Janette Oke and Laurel Oke Logan is a beautiful story of faith from the beginning to the end. Beth Thatcher has enough faith to leave her comfortable city home and travel west to do God's work of educating the children of a poor mining town, but more than that, she has the courage to continue knowing that she will have to depend on Christ's strength to carry her through more so than her own.

I have loved Janette Oke for as long as I can remember. She was the first author I came to love as a child following my Laura Ingalls Wilder obsession. I devoured the Love Comes Softly series back then and in recent years I've come to adore the Canadian West books. So, you can imagine how excited I was when Hallmark released their When Calls the Heart television series. While I love the show, it is an entirely different story than what is in the books, so I was thrilled to hear that Oke would be writing a companion with her daughter.

As a companion to the show, the book is fantastic. You'll recognize many of the characters, but they will still surprise you. The story line has the same feel as that of the show, but is, never-the-less, much different. I have to say, I prefer the way the romance is presented in Where Courage Calls better than the way it is in the television show. It's more of a slow build and there is a lot more emphasis in this book on the aspects of faith in Beth's story.

Overall, I greatly enjoyed this book for it's own sake aside from that of the show. It is richly written in that way Oke has always had of making characters jump off of the page. I could scarcely put it down, cheering for our heroine the entire time. The mystery and intrigue that surrounds the mining town is sure to be pleasant surprise to all, as is Beth's courageous journey.

AN UNFORGETTABLE STORY OF MOTHERHOOD,
THE BRAVERY OF A COMMUNITY,
AND THE STRENGTH OF
REMARKABLE AND INSPIRING WOMEN

At the age of twenty-two, Jennifer Worth leaves her comfortable home to move to a convent and become a midwife in postwar London's East End slums. The colorful characters she meets while delivering babies--from the plucky, warmhearted nuns with whom she lives, to the woman with twenty-four children, to the prostitutes and dockers of the city's seedier side--illuminate a fascinating time in history.

Jennifer Worth is a remarkable woman with a beautiful story to tell, one painted by the all the colors of real life in 1950's London. She shows us what it's like to be a young woman, dedicated to the care of other women on a bicycle with a simple bag headed to home deliveries, something almost inconceivable today. We get to see what life is like for the feisty nuns at the convent where she lives.

Worth not only illustrates a world full of big and beautiful characters living their day-to-day lives but seamlessly incorporates information on the history of women's healthcare that not only gives us an insight into the past but into the present politics surrounding the issue. She did this so well that it didn't burden the story in the least, and I felt like I learned a great deal over the course of the book.

Some of the characters she depicts made me laugh out loud while other made me cry. One of the most important topics she touches on is the red-light district in London at that time. She does a marvelous job showing the reality of the situation by letting us see it through the eyes of a poor, young girl who was coerced into stepping into that world and then found herself trapped within it. Parts of it are very hard to read, but I feel it is something important to show when we have the reality of it all around us today as part of the human trafficking situation.

Overall, I adored this book and I think anyone who is a fan of the BBC series will as well. Jennifer Worth is a natural storyteller with a good sense of pace and suspense. It is as far from 'a boring memoir' as one can get.

Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel's story is about to be completely rewritten. (Book blurb)

Okay.
. . .

Okay, honestly, this review is far over-due. It has taken me some time to get my thoughts and feelings toward this book straight, and I'm still not certain that I have entirely figured them out. That said, I can find very little wrong with the The Fault in Our Stars. John Green, though I may not feel him to be the writing-god hero-of-romance talent that some claim him to be, is a good writer. He is, however, a good writer of contemporary commercial fiction rather than a literary genius. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I enjoyed the book, but I realized near the end that something had been keeping me somewhat emotionally distant from the characters. I didn't cry at the end like I had expected too. Being one to bawl loud and long over any little thing in a novel, this was very strange. Given some time to think about it, I believe the main reason is because of Hazel's Nihilistic attitudes--any form of Nihilism being nothing less than repulsive to me--which seem to stem from a strange mix of acceptance toward her prognosis, hopelessness, and an elevated sense of her own intelligence.

And there is nothing wrong in any of this. It's just off-putting to me. I like spiritualism in any and every sense. Without a feeling of hope, there is--for me--never any true, traumatic loss. I wasn't able to attachment myself to Hazel the way others were for the above reasons, and I, unfortunately, didn't find Augustus all that romantic.

Did anyone else feel the book fell a little short of the hype?

The Movie

No doubt, the movie was cute. I love the actors who played in it, and they did a marvelous job. Again, I just didn't connect with the story that well. I felt that the vibe between Hazel and Gus was more sappy than it was romantic, and the fact that I went on opening night and had to listen to all the girls whispering "Okay" back and forth to each other and sobbing like they had just lost their best friend probably didn't help matters. The experience was funny though, and I always love seeing reactions to movie adaptations.

As far as the translation from book-to-movie went, I think it was superb. I especially like how they showed the text messages. It was a beautiful, well-produced movie.

And that's all I have to say. I may read another John Green novel in the future, but I'm afraid that this isn't my genre and I don't expect to have the same fervent love for his work as so many my age appear to have.(Arya) Paigehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01486874121840971754noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5767021863002543613.post-34313735151220909772014-07-15T10:40:00.001-04:002016-03-21T08:14:31.609-04:00A Countess Below Stairs by Eva Ibbotson

A Countess Below Stairs by Eva Ibbotson 5 of 5 stars.

An improper romance. . .

After the Russian Revolution turns her world topsy-turvy, Anna, a young Russian countess, has no choice but to flee to England. Penniless, Anna hides her aristocratic background and takes a job as servant in the household of the esteemed Westerholme family, armed only with an outdated housekeeping manual and sheer determination. Desperate to keep her past a secret, Anna is nearly overwhelmed by her new duties--not to mention her instant attraction to Rupert, the handsome Earl of Westerholme. To make matters worse, Rupert appears to be falling for her as well. As their attraction grows stronger, Anna finds it more and more difficult to keep her most dearly held secrets from unraveling. And then there's the small matter of Rupert's beautiful and nasty fiance... (Book blurb)

A Countess Below Stairs is a gorgeous narrative that floats easily between characters, nations, and cultures without so much as a stumble. It is the story of a penniless, aristocratic girl with a heart for service and of a man bound by a promise to his elder brother who died in the war that he would try and save the money-draining family estate. It is not a love story. It is a character story, moved along by a hilarious and twisty but beautiful plot. It is not that terribly romantic, but it is funny and endearing and will make you root for the protagonists and wish true bodily harm on the villains.

Eva Ibbotson, to me, is a master storyteller. One of my favorite books of all time is A Company of Swans, and I am fully convinced that no one can write romance quite like Ibbotson. I was expecting a little more of that from A Countess Below Stairs, but it was more plot oriented, feeling a bit Downton Abbey-ish as they fight to save the estate, which is fine. It was a fun book to read. I loved the Russian characters and the history that was within it, and to be quite honest, Ibbotson's prose is so wonderful the story could have been going in complete circles and I would have still enjoyed it.

This is a book for people who appreciate beautiful writing and love a good story.
Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore 4 of 5 stars.

Welcome to a glorious realm
of mystery, magic, heroism and danger.

In a world where a small percentage of people have an extreme skill called a Grace, King Leck's Grace allowed him to tell lies that everyone believed.

When Bitterblue became queen at ten years old, she thought her father's murder meant the end of his violent, sociopathic influence.

She was wrong.

The intensely anticipated companion to the New York Times bestsellers Graceling and Fire is even more "rageful, exhilarating, wistful," and romantic. Now eighteen and believing her advisers are overprotecting her, Bitterblue begins sneaking outside the castle at night to walk the streets of her own city, disguised and alone--risking her life as well as her heart. (Book blurb)

At the age of ten, Bitterblue inherited a kingdom still swathed in the mental fog created by her father's Graced lies. She herself can barely untangle truth from fallacy in her own mind when she struggles to grasp the reality behind her childhood memories. Coddled by her advisers and imprisoned behind her desk and stacks and stacks of papers requiring her signature, Bitterblue spends eight years unaware of the darkness still lingering in her castle and the terrible poverty clinging to her beautiful streets.

Curiosity and a sharp mind finally lead Bitterblue to explore what really lies in Bitterblue City. When she does she is faced with one mystery after the other. She becomes a truth-seeker wrapped up in a web of deceit and intrigue as she begins to discover just how deep and lasting her father's reign was. Or who is still affected by his power. The only people Bitterblue can fully trust in her increasingly dangerous world are her old friends Katsa and Po and their companions.

Kristin Cashore is an exquisitely simple writer who seems to have a "Grace" for world-building. Bitterblue is yet another example of her beautiful, tight prose wrapped up in a forever thrumming, character-driven plot. Cashore fans will devour this book, with it's lovely cast including everyone's all-time favorites Katsa and Po.

I enjoyed reading Bitterblue very much. I always love Cashore's prose, and I particularly liked the cast of characters in this novel which is both a sequel to Graceling and a companion to Fire. We were able to see characters from both of those books as well as meet some new ones like the charming and piratical Saf. What did surprise me, however, was that I had a hard time loving Bitterblue. She's a lovely character, but--for me--she pales in comparison to characters like Katsa and Fire.

Other than my slight dissatisfaction with the protagonist, I loved this book. I continue to love the world of Cashore's novels as it keeps getting even more solid and real in my mind. I enjoy the gruesome realism used to depict the atrocities that happened in Leck's time, and I think that Cashore does a wonderful job drawing a line just before things become too descriptive.

The vibrant characters, the satisfying pace of the plot, the intrigue, and the glittering, fantastic world are sure to be loved by any and all fantasy fans. There is virtually no one who I wouldn't suggest Bitterblue or any of Kristin Cashore's other novels to.
The Falconer by Elizabeth May 5 of 5 stars.

One girl's nightmare

is this girl's faery tale.

SHE'S A STUNNER.

Edinburgh, 1844. Eighteen-year-old Lady Aileana Kameron, the only daughter of the Marquess of Douglas, has everything a girl could dream of: brains, charm, wealth, a title--and drop-dead beauty.

SHE'S A LIAR.

But Aileana only looks the part of an aristocratic young lady. She's leading a double life: She has a rare ability to sense the sìthichean--the faery race obsessed with slaughtering humans--and, with the aid of a mysterious mentor, has spent the year since her mother died learning how to kill them.

SHE'S A MURDERER.

Now Aileana is dedicated to slaying the fae before they take innocent lives. With her abilities and her knack for inventing ingenious tools and weapons--from flying machines to detonators to lightning pistols--ruthless Aileana has one goal: Destroy the faery who destroyed her mother.

SHE'S A FALCONER.

The last in a line of female warrior born with a gift for hunting and killing the fae, Aileana is the sole hope of preventing a powerful faery population from massacring all of humanity. Suddenly, her quest is a lot more complicated. She still longs to avenge her mother's murder--but she'll have to save the world first. (Jacket blurb)

Lady Aileana Kameron has run on pure rage and hatred since the night she watched her mother's gruesome murder at the hands of a ruthless and deadly sìthichean. Covered in her mother's blood and armed with only an iron blade she had gone in search of vengeance only to be met by an unlikely savior, Kiaran McKay, a faery of the same race that murdered her mother.

Smothering her grief beneath her seething anger, Aileana enters into a bitter alliance with Kiaran in which he teaches her how to kill his kind. Aileana doesn't understand him or his motives because Kiaran is hiding from her the real reason why he is training her. And it is not for her own personal vengeance.

The Falconer by Elizabeth May is a vibrant, fast-paced steampunk novel that will hold you captive from the first moment and leave you breathless at the end. I loved ever single second of this novel. It was one of those books that as soon as I finish it, I immediately open it up and begin it again. It deserves an encore!

The characters are atypical and interesting, the lore surrounding the story is sound, and the prose is precise and quick. I loved the depth and personalities of the characters. I was cheering for Aileana the whole time and sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would become of Kiaran. Too often in YA fantasy the supposedly feral and sexy mythical hero turns out to be far too predictable and boring. Kiaran, however, remained a wildcard up to the very end and I loved that.

The end, by the way, is absolutely wretched. The kind of cliffhanger that haunts you and leaves you making up fanfic plots as you desperately wait for the next book.
Elizabeth May has fashioned a marvelous fantasy with a kick-ass heroine in a dark steampunk world with a plot that will keep you flipping the pages. I look forward to so much more from this brilliant debut author! The Falconer is, by far, my favorite book this year.

**This novel was sent to me for review by Chronicle Books. My opinions are completely unbiased. I would like to take a moment to say that Chronicle Books does an amazing job with their bindings. This book, like all the others I have received from them, is absolutely exquisite. Not only is the jacket pretty, but the engravings on the book itself are beautiful as well.
Nate and his friends are thrilled to discover an ancient book of magic spells hidden in the school library--they now have the means to stand up to the villains who make high-school life such a battle. But, when the book's dark magic releases a fictional killer in the real world, the teens will need to prove they have what it takes to be heroes, or fall as bloody victims in their own horror story turned real. (Book blurb)

A rag-tag group of grade nine nerds, each with his own difficulties at home, gather together for a book club called The Page Turners. The boys have found that the only place they truly feel safe from the critical eyes of the small town Maplewright and the dangers of being on the low end of the totem pole in highschool is within the walls of fiction and fantasy. When the boys stumble across an ancient text of magic spells, however, they couldn't guess what sort of darkness would emerge when those walls come crumbling down.

The Page Turners is an incredible coming-of-age story for teens who have found comfort and refuge in the pages of fantasy, science fiction, and horror. The story is dark, lyric, and seamless as it transitions from excerpts of one fantastical story to the all too real lives of the three boys to story centers around and back again. The narrative is rich in imagery and foreshadowing as it progresses and the writing alone is sure to keep the reader enthralled. It, in itself, is a page turner.

Kevin T. Johns has crafted a wonderful piece that is sure to appeal to the audience of ages 12-16 and anyone who can remember being a bit of a fantasy geek. The differing situations and genuine reactions of the characters are sure to be relatable, in some way, to all readers. The author has an amazing gift for metaphor and uses in quite liberally--though with good structure--throughout the novel, giving the narrative a very unique and captivating tone. The story will catch and hold your attention from the very beginning. The varying stories within the story were my favorite part, and I would love to see Kevin Johns write a high-fantasy epic or something of the sort.

I would like to take a moment to point out how wonderfully put-together and bound The Page Turners is as well. It goes above and beyond many self-published or independently published print novels. It is a truly gorgeous book and well worth the full-market price. I could certainly see it proudly displayed on the shelves of an indie book store.

All in all, The Page Turners is a fantastic read that I would suggest specifically for younger teens and die-hard fantasy lovers.

The debut episode of Mistakes Rookie Authors Make, a weekly short-video series featuring writing tips for first-time authors, premiered online last Monday.

The series is hosted by yours truly.

Unless you’ve already purchased my novel, The Page Turners, you probably have no idea who I am, and you’re probably asking yourself, “Just what qualifies this Kevin T. Johns guy to host a web series about mistakes rookie authors make in the drafting of their manuscripts?

Well, the answer is simple, my friends.

I’m qualified to talk about the mistake authors make because… I’ve made them all myself!

Too long a book, too many character, a mish-mash of genres, not backing up my master copy, having no B plot, forcing rough drafts on friends and family, letting technology stand in my way, allowing myself to get distracted by other projects, giving in to apathy and laziness and self-doubt and fear – I’ve done it all folks!

Writing a novel is not an easy task, your high school education probably didn’t equip you with the skill-set required to write a novel. Heck, I have a master’s degree in English Literature, and it still took me eight years to craft The Page Turners.

Amongst the myriad of missteps I made along the way to publication, I think the largest was not seeking support, advice, and training from those who had been there before me, and already walked the path I was blindly stumbling my way down.

Your average person doesn’t dive into advanced physics and expect to excel without the support of a teacher, and yet so many of us approach novel writing in just that manner

We have this image of “the artist” in our society as this loner individual, existing on the periphery of society, capturing the metaphysical energies of the muse, and translating that power down onto the canvass or the written page.

But that isn’t how it really works.

There is nothing metaphysical about writing a novel. Like everything else in life, what it takes to write and publish a book is hard work, perseverance, an adequate knowledge-base, and an appropriately developed skill-set.

I encourage any aspiring or struggling authors reading this to check out Mistakes Rookie Authors Make and sign-up for the mailing list to get a new episode sent their way every week, but if I could give them one piece of advice right now, it is this: Don’t go it alone, and don’t sit around waiting for the muse to visit you (she tends to be an often tardy mistress).

Seek out the supports you need. The internet in an absolute wealth of knowledge. Get help from veterans, experts, coaches and mentors. Take training and attend workshops. And, most important of all, put in the hard work necessary.

There is nothing magical about the process involved in writing a novel. But, if you are lucky, that end product, the book itself, just might work some magic for your readers.

Best friends Meg and Minie each have their reasons for being there (which involve T.J., the school's most eligible bachelor) and look forward to two glorious day of boys, booze, and fun-filled luxury.

But what they expect is definitely not what they get, and what starts out as fun turns dark and twisted after the discovery of a DVD with a sinister message: Vengeance is mine.

Suddenly people are dying, and with a storm raging outside, the teens are cut off from the outside world. No electricity, no phones, no internet, and a ferry that isn't scheduled to return for two days. As the deaths become more violent and the teens turn on each other, can Meg find the killer before more people die? Or is the killer closer to her than she could ever imagine? (Book blurb)

Meg Pritchard is a writer, an introvert. For her entire high school life she has lived to take care of her emotionally unstable best-friend Minnie, but Minnie's constant mood changes and possessiveness are beginning to wear on Meg's nerves. She's been accepted into a college thousands of miles away, and Minnie's anxiety at her leaving has only been growing as the time comes closer for Meg to leave. As a sort of last chance to bond, Meg--against her better judgement--agrees to go with Minnie to a house party on a small, ritzy island.

She expected the unchaperoned chaos of a house full of teenagers, but now she'll be lucky if she can make it out alive.

Ten by Gretchen McNeil is a summer thriller. It's a fast read filled with suspense and a creep-factor that will make you want to leave the light on as you read it. Nothing is predictable in McNeil's work as you wait on the booggy-man to jump out of the closet. This isn't your fainting heroine type of horror story though. The closer you are to the end of the book the more you want to shout your encouragement to Meg. Even if there are a few times you want to scream, "DON'T GO IN THERE!!"

I am not a fan of horror movies. However, some of my favorite YA books have turned out to be in that very sub genre. Ten by Gretchen McNeil, however, was a bit too much for me. I literally couldn't read it after nightfall. It was full of suspense and gorey, cold-blooded murders. No, thank you. I also found the narrator, Meg, a bit whiney at the start of the book.

But, despite all of this, I did enjoy it. The last scenes in the book completely redeemed it anywhere else it fell short to my slightly biased taste. Meg turned out to be a kick-ass heroine and even though in the end she's lost nearly everything, you can feel a sort of soldier-like depression but also a hardy resilience, and you know that the character you've been following will be okay.

McNeil's writing was simple throughout most of the book. There wasn't a great deal of profound depth, which makes it a perfect quick-read in the summer time or between hectic classes during the darker half of the year. Her real, shining talent is in writing the suspenseful scenes, like the fight scene at the end. That last fourth of the book blew me away. The words and the actions they portrayed had no awkwardness, they flowed perfectly and kept me on the edge of my seat.

Overall, a wonderful short read for your horror fan, a beyond perfect gift for Halloween, Ten definitely deserves the attention of a suspense-loving reader.

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins 5 of 5 stars.

SPARKS ARE IGNITING.
FLAMES ARE SPREADING.
AND THE CAPITOL WANTS REVENGE.

Against all odds, Katniss has won the Hunger Games. She and fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark are miraculously still alive. Katniss should be relieved, happy even. After all, she has returned to her family and her longtime friend, Gale. Yet nothing is the way Katniss wishes it to be. Gale holds her at an icy distance. Peeta has turned his back on her completely. And there are whispers of a rebellion against the Capitol--a rebellion that Katniss and Peeta may have helped create.

Much to her shock, Katniss has fueled an unrest she's afraid she cannot stop. And what scares her even more is that she's not entirely convinced she should try. As time draws near for Katniss and Peeta to visit the districts on the Capitol's cruel Victory Tour, the stakes are higher than ever. If they can't prove without a shadow of a doubt, that they are lost in their love for each other, the consequences will be horrifying. (Book blurb)

Tensions have been rising in the districts of Panem. How could they not with a continuing ceaseless slaughter year after year of their children? As things rise to the boiling point security is tightened to a choking degree even in the middle-of-nowhere District 12. Even in the Capitol things have become shaky with unrest as an audience who has fallen in love with the two star-crossed lovers Katniss and Peeta watch them be continually punished (even if the Capitol big-wigs describe it differently) despite all they've been through. A heart, soul, and strength appear in Panem as the people rich and poor alike begin to adopt Katniss's symbol of the Mockingjay and whispers of full-on rebellion circulate.

It doesn't take long for Katniss to realize she's the face of this rebellion, that her act with the berries in the 74th Annual Hunger Games has been the breath of air that pushed the tense nation over the edge. She also knows that the President and the Peacekeepers will never forgive her for it.

Catching Fire was just as thrilling and heart-wrenching as The Hunger Games showing that same steely will in Katniss too survive and that undying loyalty to those she loves. The danger and suspense that surrounds Katniss after President Snow's visit and her genuine reaction to the things they throw at her makes me love the character all the more.

What I liked best in this book was how Suzanne Collins showed the politics of Panem coming to a head and the ways in which she let Katniss and Peeta see this: with the strange salute in District 11 and the shooting of an innocent man, with the whipping of Gale, and Katniss being unable to cross over the newly electric fence. Even the way she showed Cinna's own form of rebellion and the genuine sorrow of the shallow beauty techs. All of it matched together so real and naturally and formed in our head no likely the same images of what was happening that were forming in Katniss's own.

I loved seeing the dynamics this added to all of the characters. Peeta's steady strength shown under stress, and Haymitch's blatant disregard for the feelings of the two kids in his care when it came down to it. Haymitch was given a chance to help this rebellion fly and he pushed his Mockingjay under the bus for it. Gale's readiness to fight at the first signs of a possible war in Panem was staggering.

Everything seems so natural, which is probably what's hooked me on this novel. I've always liked books that dealt with history in a way I could understand, by showing the actions (some of which you wouldn't expect at all) from the people who surrounded those events, people you can relate with. This futuristic idea of a cruel totalitarian society in North American and how fed-up the people are with it is made real by the characters, their beliefs and their actions. It's a beautifully harmonized story that made me cry like a baby at least twice while reading it and especially at the end.

There's no one in particular I would suggest this too. I think everyone should at least give it a try because it is an amazing series. Mockingjay, here I come!

And may the odds be ever in your favor!(Arya) Paigehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01486874121840971754noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5767021863002543613.post-28151998753472718432012-03-30T09:57:00.000-04:002012-03-30T09:57:39.897-04:00The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins 5 of 5 stars.

COULD YOU SURVIVE ON YOUR OWN,
IN THE WILD, WITH EVERY ONE OUT TO
MAKE SURE YOU DON'T LIVE TO SEE
THE MORNING?

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before-- and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender . But if she is to win, she will have start making choices that weight survival against humanity and life against love. (Book blurb)

Katniss Everdeen is strong, she is a survivor. If anyone should be able to win the bloody death match that is Panam's yearly Hunger Games, it is her. But Katniss also has chinks in her armor. One of those chinks is the boy with the bread, Peeta Mellark. The one person she could possibly owe, the one who she fears she would never be able to kill.

As the two are forced into a sort of alliance and what tenuous bond they may have had is stretched by suspicion and strengthened by friendship, Katniss must decide what's more important: Playing by the Gamemaker's rules and getting home to her family, or risking everything by letting her humanity win over and proving to the Capitol that she is not just a piece in their Games.

The Hunger Games is an epic tale of strength, innocence, and goodness against all that is corrupt and vile. It's a story of courage even in the face of not a single shred of hope. It's the story of a girl who knows what it means to survive, and a boy with a love that shatters every piece of self-preservation and carries with it its own sort of rebellion. The Hunger Games rings of political unrest and a fervent desire for change and resistance against those who kill and oppress so many.
This book blew me away from the moment I cracked open the pages. I have been completely glued to the series these last few days and now though I'm dying to get my hands on Mockingjay, I'm afraid to see it end, especially since I don't expect to see a lot of light in the last book.

Suzanne Collins has done a remarkable job creating this dystopian world. The basic history of Panem is put forward in such natural and easy ways by Katniss's mind and by the things that happen around her. The setting is so perfectly put together, so outrageous at times and yet so real that it sets the stage for everything happening in the story effortlessly. The characters have distinct and strong personalities that do not waver, but neither do they always do what you would expect. This book had everything it needed to grab my attention and hold it until long after I finished the last page.

What really surprised me reading The Hunger Games was that while it was well written, it wasn't written in a way to give it any sort of airs. It isn't particularly lyrical, the prose isn't beautifully turned, and I found myself a bit annoyed by how many things were told rather than shown. And none of this is a bad thing. It was so expertly done as to give us a clear view of the action without always knowing the characters' exact motivations. Despite being in first person from Katniss's point of view and rolling with a kind of internal monologue, we don't always know what Katniss's feelings about certain things are. The only time we get a clear glimpse is when she colors the other characters actions with her own ideas of what those actions mean.

Despite this, and maybe it was just me who saw it that way, there is a tangible intensity to the story that I like. You never really forget all that is at stake for the Tributes or how both Katniss and Peeta are gambling with their actions before and during the games.

I could keep rambling on about how much I adored some of the characters, but I don't think that's necessary for this review. If you read, or have read, the books then the characters speak for themselves. They don't need a lot of coloring or hype, they just are what they are.

I know that if you are a fan of dystopian fantasy or just like a really good, pretty intense book you will love The Hunger Games. And may the odds be ever in your favor!(Arya) Paigehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01486874121840971754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5767021863002543613.post-24446931418377658342012-03-28T09:47:00.000-04:002012-03-28T09:47:09.332-04:00The Hunger Games Movie ReviewI hate trying to write a synopsis for a movie, so I hope that you can all forgive me if I skip this one. I mean, you would have to be living under a rock to have missed all the hype surrounding the much anticipated Hunger Games. (Just in case you have managed to miss the never ending stream of promotion on tv and online, I'll post the trailer below.)

I had been wanting to read the books for a while and something just kind of pushed me away, but I was determined to start reading them and see the movie at the midnight premier. So, not having gotten more than a couple pages into the book, I went to see the Hugner Games sleepy-eyed at midnight on the 22nd. And boy did I get a surprise. I had a feeling this movie would be good, but it was beyond epic, and I haven't stopped thinking about it since. As a matter of fact, the reason I haven't written the reviews is because I've been so wrapped up in the books (I came home at 3:00AM and read myself to sleep!) ever since.

Having read the first book and being almost finished with the second, I can honestly say that the casting was simply remarkable. I loved seeing Josh Hutcherson playing Peeta and couldn't help thinking of the kid who made be cry so many times while watching the movie adaptation of Bridge to Terabithia, another favorite book of mine. And while I have heard some people are a little disgruntled with the casting of Cinna, I couldn't disagree more. He was absolutely perfect in my opinion. As was Haymitch. I don't think any of the character could have been better cast. It was all so perfect and the acting beyond flawless.

The location and special effects where everything such an epic book adaptation should be, surreal and incredibly lifelike. Everything was so perfectly set up it was like stepping into the book for a little while. I was just blown away.

Now, I'm thinking about going to see the movie for a second time, but thankfully I have the books to keep me satiated for a while. I can't remember being this excited for a book series in forever, and I think that the movie being so wonderfully made just gives fans one more thing to delve into and keep the fire for the books burning.

Have you seen it? Written a review? Let me know what you thought!

That's a quote from a commercial, that perfectly sums up my reading style. At any given time, I'm in the middle of at least three books. Rare is the read that can solely hold my attention from start to finish.

The Hunger Games was one such book. The only time I put it down was to hurry and grab a copy of Catching Fire.

Adrenaline inducing reads are often the most memorable. Here are four that, just like The Hunger Games, I can't forget:

Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder- I literally stayed up 'til three in the morning to finish this one. Yelena is, if possible, even stronger than Katniss, with a stubborn streak miles wide.

Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick- He could love her or kill her. The tension arising from Patch's actions is what makes this book unputdownable. Is that not a word? It should be.

My Soul to Take by Rachel Vincent- Banshees aren't too common in YA fiction. Watching Kaylee figure out what's wrong with her is irresistible. Also, just look at that cover.

Across the Universe by Beth Revis- You wake up in a spaceship after being a victim of a murder attempt. What do you do? I would curl up in a fetal position and stay there. Thankfully, Amy is not anything like me and takes readers on a wildly exciting adventure.

These four reads all kept me guessing, just like The Hunger Games. A splash of suspense and a huge does of intrigue make for an adrenaline inducing read.
I've also said that I would try as I read them. However, instead of writing a review for this book, I'm going to show you the essay I wrote for a prompt in one of my classes. For the record, I thought this book was beyond amazing. I would have never picked it up on my own though. So, here you go: a little piece of my interpretation of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey.

Ken Kesey’s remarkable writing in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest lends suspense and firmness to the strange out-of-place moments happening in the mind of the narrator Bromden. The voice of his prose gives a strangely normal feel to dreamy things. The events adding up in Bromden’s head as he relates the illusionary things happening around him build up excitement like carbon dioxide builds up, ready to explode in a shaken Coke bottle. Only after the explosion can you truly see where the line between reality and dream is drawn.

The most striking scene in the novel is a scene in which Bromden is relaying what is going on in the meeting room, but he is also relaying his own specific reality. He is not entirely conscious at the beginning of the scene but at the end is pulled out of the fog by McMurphy. It is the last time he will allow himself to be pulled into and lost there in the fog. It is a turning point, a psychological breakthrough for the character. It is also a beautiful example of Kesey’s way with words when relaying things that aren’t entirely there and yet feel not only to the character but to the reader that they are concrete.

“I’m not cold anymore. I think I’ve about made it. I’m off to where the cold can’t reach me. I can stay off here for good. I’m not scared anymore. They can’t reach me. Just the words reach me, and those’re fading.”

Kesey shows dream-like illusions in Bromden’s head as he loses himself in the fog. Just when he thinks that he’s so far gone he’ll go from being a “Chronic” to a “Vegetable”, he feels someone’s voice tugging him out of whatever state he’s in.

“ That’s that McMurphy. He’s far away. He’s still trying to pull people out of the fog. Why don’t he leave me be?”

“ Just by the way the nurse is staring at me with her mouth empty of words I can see I’m in for trouble, but I can’t stop it. McMurphy’s got hidden wires hooked to it, lifting it slow just to get me out of the fog and into the open where I’m fair game. He’s doing it, wires. . .

“No. That’s not the truth. I lifted it myself.”

Bromden’s near constant association and metaphors to mechanics add a sort of suspense to the inner workings of his mind, making something simple seem far more momentous and complex than it really is physically. This lends itself to the idea that there was far more going on here than Bromden simply raising his hand. In a way, this scene shows the effect McMurphy’s strong and unbroken will power has over Bromden, how it helps him win back his own force of will that we see later has been broken--in part--by electroshock therapy.

While there were external events during this part of the story, as in most of Bromden’s dreamy parts, the central focus is on what’s happening inside his mind. What’s happening around him, but at the same time isn’t really there. Previously, he had explained quite thoroughly his theories behind the “fog machines” and how the nurses used them to put them in a sort of altered state. He compares them to things he saw when he was in the Army and thought he had it figured out how they worked. After this climactic scene, he believes that the fog machines are broken, however, it can be deduced that the fog wasn’t real to begin with. It is more of a way to show Bromden’s gradual disassociation with the world around him with something that feels more real. His getting lost in the fog (and thinking others had also) is more suspenseful than if he had just stopped noticing what was going on.

Kesey’s overall work in writing a story from the point-of-view of someone who had extricated himself from the outside world was light and natural, yet at the same time held a very real, concrete feel. His use of metaphors and allusions throughout the work help to create suspense. His way of turning psychological things into things that seem physical and external give a better feel to the internal events happening in the story and make it easier to understand their import. The simple things in the outside world are far more complex within the working of the mind, but it is only ever after showing the real picture, such as Bromden raising his hand, that this becomes obvious.(Arya) Paigehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01486874121840971754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5767021863002543613.post-91870145067483360052012-03-07T08:04:00.002-05:002012-03-07T09:17:18.021-05:00My Jane Eyre Obsession. . .I would like to devote today's blog post to my Jane Eyre obsession.

My followers might remember my review of Jane Eyre May of last year. Since then, I have watched nearly every film version out there, my favorite being the 2006 version with Toby Stephens as Mr. Rochester. He was beyond perfect! Though I do wish that had kept more of the religious themes in the book, something most of the movie versions seem to leave out. I thoroughly enjoyed the 2011 version as well. I think it had the best cast Jane I've seen, but it is definitely a movie for those of us who have read the book and can fill in the blanks.

Anywho, this post isn't about the movies exactly. I've just finished re-reading the book again and took even more away from the texts than I did last time. So, I've been in a Jane Eyre mood and have found the coolest inspired items on etsy which I will link here. I'll also include some movie pictures... just because I want to!

(Click the pictures below to visit the Etsy page for each item!)
Pretty, pretty please?? haha I'll be getting a car soon, and I think I'll have to have this! $13 is a steal too.

Yes, please! I think it would be cute to wear this to the premier of the next Twilight movie, just to confuse people! hehe

My first oil painting was of Thornfield Hall.

A quote I particularly enjoyed in my last read through:

"It does good to no woman to be flattered by her superior, who cannot possibly intend to marry her; and it is madness in all women to let a secret love kindle within the, which, if unreturned and unknown, must devour the life that feeds it; and, if discovered and responded to, must lead, ignis-fatuus-like, into miry wilds whence there is no extrication."

And... Back to the movies. :D Part of the reason I think Toby Stephens made such a good Rochester is because my opinion of him has always pretty much been that he is so ugly, he's handsome. I know! That sounds ridiculous, but its kind of true. The other reason is that I like the way he was portrayed in this movie best, he's more like I imagined him, more passionate and animated with a distinct if gruff sense of humor.

I am also of the opinion that Mia Wasikowska is the best cast Jane. She's almost exactly how I imagined her, and while lacking a bit of the fire I see her with in the book, she is very well portrayed in the 2011 version.

Now, for your viewing pleasure, I have included my favorite scene from the books as well as from the 2011 movie. I think it was incredibly well done and Michael Fassbender's performance was remarkable.

I hope I haven't bored you with my fandom. Enjoy!
Lilly Haswell remembers everything--

whether she wants to, or not. . .

AS LILLY TOILS IN HER FATHER'S APOTHECARY SHOP, preparing herbs and remedies by rote, she is haunted by memories of her mother's disappearance. Villagers whisper the tale, but her father refused to discuss it. All the while, she dreams of the world beyond--of travel and adventure and romance.

When a relative offers to host her in London, Lilly discovers the pleasures and pitfalls of fashionable society and suitors, as well as clues about her mother. But will Lilly find what she is searching for--the truth of the past and a love for the future? (Book blurb)

Lilly is a strong and capable young woman with a grieving heart and a desire for adventure. Having seen her mother leaving the village with a man by boat several years past, Lily jumps at the the opportunity to go to London the moment it is placed before her. Leaving her father and simple-minded brother to take care of the herb shop in the process.

While London was a satisfactory change of pace, Lilian Haswell not only fails to secure a husband after two seasons, she brings scandal after scandal down upon herself, her aunt, and her uncle. But when Lilly finally has leads to her mother's whereabouts and a suitor--a timid young physician--a letter arrives asking her to hurry home that her father is not well. And with that, she picks up and leaves.

The Apothecary's Daughter is an informative and masterfully written historical fiction novel that has the feel of a BBC drama. Its beautifully pieced together scenes, characters, and historical tidbits make it a fascinating read; even more so for someone interested in herbalism. The honest and humble themes of faith running throughout this novel give it that extra touch of sincerity, engraving it forever on my heart.

I truly enjoyed reading about all of the everyday tasks of a 19th century apothecary shop. A well written historical novel has to be able to capture the mundane without making it feel boring, as well as bringing suspense and drama to the specific point in history. Julie Klassen does a wonderful job at this. I soaked up all of the history surrounding the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries and all the changes that happened with the medical hierarchy during that period in time.

As for the characters, all of your favorite sort were there and then some. From the rakish bad boy Roderick Marlow, to the brooding Dr. Graves, and, my favorite, the sincere and loving Francis, the heroes were wonderful and varied. Mr. Shuttleworth was a fun addition, his eccentricity adding something unique to the cast of characters. The heroines were full of spirit and strength. I loved Mary's wit and resilience. Despite her hardships she showed a great deal of grace and courage. Lilly was a remarkable and lovable character whom I will not soon forget. Her uncomplaining and capable care of her father's patients during his sickness were touching.

The plot is full of twists and turns and surprises that kept me on my toes and flipping the pages. That said, it has a relaxed and flowing feel. Though calamity after calamity might befall the Haswell family, there are many poignant and careful interactions that weave themselves between the "exciting" parts and make it feel completely natural. The resolutions to problems and the reactions to disaster show depth in the characters.

An absolutely beautiful novel in all. If you have any interest in herbalism, or if you're just a fan of historical fiction you should give this book a try. I promise that you will love it!
